I had jazz all day yesterday,  my husband forgot to bring a couple of items for the keyboard and had to go back home to get them  (One hour lost) so we got a late start .... 1/2 hour...  well you don't want to do that with 18 guys on the bandstand chomping at the bit to play and 75 folks that have paid to get in, waiting to hear them.    It was wild, crazy and not so much fun...  Then the second band in the evening showed up late as well and it was a rush to get them set up and they had a packed house too.   GEEZE  I'm just getting tooooo old to do this Stuff......   When I came home I tried some Zentangle to unwind but my eyes crossed...

Value study of the two pears I painted last week. 2 1/2 x 3 1/4 inch. This is the first of three panels I'm going to do on the same sheet of sketch paper.

Fred, what a beautiful sky and water.  The top of the mountain looks like a bear!!!!  Nice painting.

Catherine, this is an interesting pear study.  You are not afraid of the darks and the strong shadows cast by the pears are nice.  You also have molded the pears well with form shadows.  I like the stripes behind the pears but worry that they may draw too much.attention.  If you were doing this in color, the stripes could be a light, soft color to avoid demanding attention.  Nice study.

Catherine, this is going to be an interesting study. I like the stripes for background. Look forward to seeing the others.

Thank you Jen and Sam. I'm not sure what I'll do with the finished three panel sketch. I might go on to do one in color and will remember what you said about the stripes needing to not take up too much attention.

Catherine, this photo of a Mennonite family was snapped by photographer John Livzey (www.johnlivzey.com) last week when he saw them at Union Station in Los Angeles. It made me think of you because the contrast in values is so pronounced.

Catherine, I love your pear study in color and think the green background is beautiful, especially behind the red pear as it is a complementary color. But best of all, the skin of the pears is beautifully done. The shadow of the pears are on the right side, so one option you could consider exploring in a future painting is more intense darkness on the right side and some white or very pale highlights on the left sides of the pears ...

Fred, your alternative history painting of the Vikings coming to England and the bear mountain is wonderful. Where do you get these ideas?!

FRED - Your 6x6 of the bear walk has a good use of orangey earth to go with your nice blue for the water. The bear island's wet-on-wet sky has a lovely looseness that is always a good choice to balance with crisp edges in a ptg..

CATHERINE - You have darker darks on these pears Yes; you've shaded the stripes darker in the shadow part of the background, and made them lighter where the light hits. Good going. I really like your detail in the shelf, which seems delicately done and goes so well with the pears, yet it also has contrast in the spacing between the wood pieces. Am enjoying seeing your pear studies.

MARSHA - Sorry to hear that things didn't go well the other night. Sounds like this was an exceptional night though, while most times are exceptionaly good, so it all balances out (?).

ALEX - Your photo is very interesting!

I don't have gnomes in my garden but I do have fairies/elves so maybe this one could make friends with the gnomes. The elves are only five inches high and are in reality plain grey so quite hard to find.

Very nice Sarah! I watched a movie on Netflix called Photographing Fairies. It's a 1997 flim about the Cottingley Fairies in 1917 England. It was really a wonderful movie.

Hello Catherine,

The film/documentary was shown on our TV screens too. I have the book entitled " Lady Cottingley's fairies" (large thin book and very naughty...shows what the fairies get up to when not being photographed. Beautiful drawings!!!).

Thank you for your interest.
