Hello everyone. I've mia lately and have a lot of catching up to do here.

Marsha...The photo and drawing of the kid with is pants hanging down is too funny!

Fred...Your dragon at the dentist is awesome and I like how you painted the bad tooth brown lol. I also like your cool looking nebula and the rocket with the swing bad. You're so creative.

Jen..The photo of the troll/elf in your front yard has such a great face. I've never seen one so life like. I also really like your sunflower oil painting. Maybe you could paint a few ahead of time at your leasure and that way you can take your time and also be a step ahead of the game when you're asked to submit something for your art group. I also like your drawing of your friend. I don't have advice about drawing portraits as I really haven't done very many of them.

Sam..I hope your back is feeling better. Back pain can wear you down really quick.

Geri..I like your sketch done at the Jiffy Lube. I still haven't worked up the courage to draw in public. I also hope you feel better soon.

I did study of some grasses that I will post after I post my hello to everyone. It's just a reproduction of grasses that were in a watercolor study book I have. It took me a week of doing one piece of grass each morning. I'm working on a still life of two pears but won't have it done until probably Wed. as I have to have it scanned.

The grass study is just watercolor and brush on 9x12 140 lb. cold press watercolor paper.

 I listen to Charlie Christian almost daily with Benny Goodman mostly Jazz for me now but I like all music

I noticed that you number your sketches.  Not a bad idea.  What is your goal??  Your grasses are great as all your wc sketches I am still envious.

Thanks Geri. You could do this just as well as I can/do. Just handle your watercolor brush like a pencil and while your lines are still wet with the paint, add another color to blend in with them. Then while it's all still fairly wet, push the color here and there until you have it where you want it. Really, it's not hard at all. I number things in order to keep track of my progress, and in this case, because it's from someone elses work, it's to identify where the subject idea came from. It's also a reminder of past painting/drawing experiences as I view my art work the way a person would a photo album.

Thank you Jim.  Watercolor can do all sorts of things. You can guide it or let it go where it feels like.

FRED - I like the wispiness in your nebula with the light washes drifting across it. A sense of motion and atmosphere there. The contrast in the lower part is just right. I think this could be your best that I've seen, or certainly one of your best.
The bears dancing and jammin' - makes me want to get up and twirl!
 
MARSHA - Sounds like your Chgo. family have good secure jobs which is imp. these days. We are an hour South of Chicago - much closer to where the Bears team practices, but we use "Chicago" as our handle since Chgo. is very much on people's minds here with its news. Not too far to go for the art museum and other amenities, but these days I'm content to stay "down South" where it's rural yet.
Your ref. photo looked great. Good to paint, but too ambitious for me. Have you ptd. some from your band photos?
 
JEN - Your sunflower looks good to me. The green mound under it was the only thing that confused me, but the brushstrokes and colors in the flower are lively. This will brighten anyone's space. What is this fundraiser for?
The drwg. of your friend has good contrast and your pencil strokes help model her face and hair well. Her eyes seem esp. well done. I can see why she grabbed it. The first thing I noticed was her sparkly personality. She looks to be a dear one.
 
GERI - Great idea and nice sketch. I am much too slow and people move too much for me to catch them as they wait. I visited my 100+ aunt last wk. and even she moved too much as she worked on a coloring project & sat looking in one direction! I didn't ask her to stay still, but thought she'd be an easy target. Ha. Every time she moved, it made her profile completely diff.! I don't know how you sketch fast enough, but I can't manage. Good practice tho, for sure. There are some people so interesting, I'd love to photo them, but no nerve to ask.

Catherine, good to see ypur work. You are so neat and organized. Nice studies of the grasses. I like the colours and placement it looks like a botanical book illustration.

Thank you all for your kind comments. Kim good idea about stock piling fundraisers!! Usually it is just the once a year one and we have rather more notice than we did this year. The latest one was for a fundraiser for a lady with cancer and came up rather suddenly. I may have to give her something else as it it raining like mad now and the painting may just be too wet by Saturday. Marsha looks like a great band!

JEN - I didn't have that in mind in my comment but it IS a good idea. Maybe someone else mentioned it, or you read into my comment more than what was actually there.  Perhaps it was your orig. idea and something made you think of it...hope you have fun stocking up your ptgs.. They each look fun. Each yr. does the theme change or could you paint ahead and do whatever you like?

Hi all , Jim man after my own heart I listen to the big bands on direct tv all day and sometimes listen to my cd's of the 30-50's era can't paint without music Now this is a quick pastel I call "plein air somewhere in the world" playing around with water ,credit card and alcohol 5x6 ( heaven forbid not the drinking kind ) Big Smile

Fred and Jim I love your paintings! I'm going to have to experiment more with scraping watercolor and start using my gouache paint to get effects like you have with the indian painting.
