Jen, I too like Wallis paper and use it for my oil pastels. One advantage is that it stands up to solvent, and I apply Turpenoid with a brush to "melt" the OP colors.

I did a first "draft" underpainting this morning. I didn't sketch them first as holding a pencil was not an option so I just used a #4 round watercolor brush and drew them in with a light yellow ochre wash. I have 51 minutes of Canto Gregoriano chant Youtube video and I vowed to stop painting when the music stopped. My RA pain level is really high right now due to the cold weather and it's so frustrating as it effects my right hand and back so much. I will continue working on these chicks when I get home from work tonight. I at least have them in position to continue. :) think positive this cold streak in ohio ends soon! The second chick on the left appears to not have both legs showing in the actual photo. I'll have to decide how to handle the missing leg problem later on.
Catherine, these little chicks are wonderful. You've captured them perfectly in your watercolour. Hope your pain subsides, looking forward to seeing the chicks progress.
Bonnie C & C most welcome / appreciated
Catherine - nice underpainting. You have those little guys off to a great start. I like your idea about setting aside a specific amount of time using music (btw - big fan of chant). Sorry to hear about your pain. Question: Do you find listening to the music and focusing on painting helps to drop your pain level? I've read several very interesting articles on pain management and music therapy - hope it works for you as well.
Catherine, I'm impressed that you did this drawing with a brush and watercolor. You did a super job. I'm also looking forward to seeing the progress.
I'm sorry to hear that you have RA. My husband's daughter also has it and is kept relatively pain free with meds that cost more per year than some people earn. Would a heating pad on your back and hands help? Hope you feel better very soon.

Thank you so much B. J. Bailey! Mornings are the worst time for me but I paint anyway lol.
Forgot to add this.. this painting is being done on a sheet of 9x12 inch 140 lb. coldpress watercolor paper.
Catherine, I'm so sorry about your RA. Despite your pain and inability to hold your pencil, you created such a wonderful "sketch" to build on. These chicks are precious. Can't wait to see what you do this evening!
This is a preliminary sketch to try and see if I could get something that was close to the photo. I do have a hard time with perspective and after you scan and take a look in the computer you can see all sorts of things needing corrected plus I missed a few of the details. It is on 5.5" x 8.5" drawing paper. I scketched with pencil and then with ink pen.
Thank you Sheila, Sam and Alex. I can't wait to get home and get started on them again! I have plenty of paper and paint so if I mess them up I can just keep doing them again until I get them just right.
I do find music does wonders with my pain management and I've found that easy going music without words or in another language is the best for me. I have one CD I listen to on the way to work Habib Koite' & Bamada the Baro album is wonderful for easing me into the day before my meds have kicked in. I could take more pain meds but that effects other areas of your body and I don't or am not ready for that trade off. I rarely eat red meat, tomato sauce, white potatoes, peppers, egg plant and white bread and pastas. I also watch carefully how much sugar I eat and how stressed out I allow my enviornment to become. If I eat too much of any of those things my pain level increases until they work their way out of my system. I also use Vit. C as it seems to balance my immune system. I take 1700 mil. a day of a RX called Salsalate along with 2 arthritis pain formula Tylenols in the a.m. I could take more Tylenol and Salsalte but I don't want to tax my body too much as meds damage your liver over time. I have changed my lifestyle a lot and after a foot surgery to correct my gate I have managed to avoid having my hip replaced. I do use a cane but that's better than taking a lot of RX's. I've also found that cursing the pain using the "F" word helps when the other rememdies aren't working so well. lol. I didn't even drive a car from 1993-2005 as they are a pain in the butt and it's scary being out there on the road with other drivers who are crazy. A while after I was diagnosed with RA my boss gave me his mom's car but I didn't drive it for 6 months as I was scared to. Every day it was "did you drive the car"? and I'd say "no,I took the bus". No one gave me a hassle but the day I did drive the car to work it became "Cath drove the car today"!!! Day and everyone congratulated me. ;) Now I can't imagine standing in the cold waiting for a cold bus and sitting on those hard seats.
Bonnie.. It looks really good here. I wondered how hard it would be to present the gun but you've done a really good job of it. What sort of media did you plan on doing the painting in?
Bonnie, this is a really good drawing of the gun, etc. I like that you simplified the supporting wood. This makes an interesting composition.
Bonnie, I think your details are just fine and I love it just as a sketch - the text. lending to this rustic subj.. You mentioned corrections, so not sure what you have in mind, but I wondered if the gun (rifle, or whatever the term) is a bit curved. If making adj., I'm sure it can be straightened out (excuse pun).
Catherine, your chicks are so cute and I can't wait to see when fin.!
Alex, that Jay is super! I esp. like the highlights in the berries, giving it an overall cheery feeling. Also like that pink glow in the bird.
Sammy, your baby is incredible. I'm in awe! Def. a frozen pop vs carrot - I want to go up to her with a washcloth - ha.

C&C welcome!
Wow, Sam this is so awesome. All the comments of you being the Master of CP is so true, and yes it is a painting.

Critique and criticism appreciated.
Hi Bonnie, this is an excellent sketch! I like the effect of sketching in pen. What medium will you be using for the final piece?
Catherine, so glad you're finding a balance between mobility and overwhelming your body with meds. But, you are TOO MUCH (in a good way)!!!
