Trying again to paint myself from a mirror, not finished, but wanted to share it before I went further and messed it up! All critique is welcome!
Well I've gotten some oils and I love them. Here's another self portrait I've been working on using a mirror. Progress!
Small update. Tried to fix the eyes and cranium and the colors. Sorry for the bad photo, I'm using my phone. If anyone has any tips on painting hair that would be great too.
Progress! Ignore the funky background! :)
Hi, jrdn keep up the good work you can really tell you are progressing. A couple questions though. Are you painting using a mirror or a picture and are you using the same lighting each time. I ask because the human eye can pick up colors and shading that photos cannot. A shadow isn't only black or blue but can have red yellows green. Its endless. Try sitting and just staring at the object or yourself for a while and try and identify all the different hues. Another good exercise is too try and paint with only two complimentary colors ( purple and yellow, orange and blue, green and red). It really makes you exercise adding depth with shading. I hope this helps some.

Thank you for the reply!
Yes, I am using a mirror, and my lighting is pretty inconsistent. I'm definitely going to try to be more observant and deliberate in trying to match hues.
As far as the complimentary color exercise, do I still use white? Or do an entire painting with only the two colors?
Thanks again
I haven't had time to practice as much as I'd like, but I recently started this still life and I figured I'd share it. It's not finished, hopefully I can refine it more.
