I really want to be better at Texas landscapes..I painted these from pictures...I don/t feel very confident of my work, as I am learning as I paint . Have been taking some classes and reading..but I need some feedback...I like these , but very traditional...isnt that okay? why does everything have to be so edgy these days?
Everything doesn't have to be edgy these days. With the internet, there are communities of artists around the world pursuing whatever motivates them personally. You can find a group for almost anything these days. Individual blogs and sites are endless. If traditional is your thing, you can find someone who will support you and buy your work, the same goes for crafty, abstract, realism, ethnic, and contemporary. If your interested in Russian egg painting, I'm sure you'll find a group through the internet and think that there is a new Russian egg painting trend going on. Follow your passion because finding a market, support, inspiration, and community is easier than ever before.
Don't worry about the confidence, do it because you enjoy doing it. I started to paint (plein air) after not touching a brush for a couple of decades and let me tell you (I suck) but my past work is highly skilled and I know it will return and flourish in time. I stop myself from thinking how far I could have been if I just kept going 20 years ago - such is life. Painting outdoors has it's own challenges. After each session I reflect on what worked successfully that morning and what needs to be corrected and just keep going.
Your doing just fine. You have captured an excellent sense of space and depth. My focus is drawn to following the trees as they go back toward the horizon. The paintings have a serene slightly mystical quality which seems to be a strength in these two works.
I like traditional and I like what you have done here. I think you have done a very good job.
The top one I like as it invites in in to walk around in the trees.
Good values in both. The 2nd one does not have the richness of the colors, which attracts my eye to the top one. I am drawn to rich colors..
Keep painting!!!
This is some great stuff you paint there ! Your style make me think of the great Russell Chatham, so yes you are good !

Thanks for everyones positive feedback. I really needed a boost..!!! Now I am firing on all cylinders. Ha.......I keep telling othere art friends what a great resource this is...
I really like them both! I like the one, lone tree in the second one a lot. The shading underneath seems to give it some sort of special significance. As if it's more than "just shading". The shades of green you've used for the trees in both pieces are wonderful, too.
My request for critques was August 2, Since then I have taken a great class in oils, teacher was excellent, I also bought her book and read it and underlined and reread it and started to practice what I learned.. December 5&6th I was in an annual show that is held in our nieghborhood each year..I sold the top picture you see, and six others, plus some small collages..Thanks for all your encouragement..!! I sold four landscapes, a still life, and collages of birds. Oh and three small cactus oils..
Congratulations!
That's wonderful - congratulations.
Man! awesome! gee, if you sold some....hey, you are on the right track---you got the style or signature. Keep on keeping on...do more.
