Getting back to oils after 30 some years of not painting, switched and took lessons in acrylics 6 years ago.but I am wondering how this picture is viewed by others. It is 24x16.I keep thinking it has a slight feel of Grandmother Moses, the small trees seem to lollypopish to me..what to do? Or am I too critical..?
Eubie, I think this painting is very good. Beautiful colors. Your greens and field colors are blended very well, they don't give the appearance of being right out of the tube. Reddish tones in the foreground add depth. You could add some peep holes in the tree foliage to avoid a more solid leaf appearance. I look forward to seeing more of your work.
Also, spent a weekend plien-air painting in Hill Country and saw some beautiful trees..think I could make the focus tree more dramatic!
Hi, eubie, Perhaps your painting is a bit allover too warm and some cooler areas in the landscape would balance it more. The trees at the far back on the hill are your darkest against lightest and are almost your focal point...way too high and dark and grab too much attention. I'd lighten them considerably to give more of a feeling of distance...arial perspective...and would make your larger tree in the foreground more the focal point.
Adding some lights on the leaves where the sun hits them would also be a good idea. The small tree touching the far left edge of the canvas could be eliminated altogether.
Good concept here that deserves more work. Keep painting! And enjoy.

Okay, Need to take a picture of my landscape reworked with everyones input..I do like it better..I do like this format for other artists viewpoints..
I think the camera warmed up the colors more on the top one,Could be where I took the picture outside..,this is the one I redid, and made the tree more of a focus and cooled down some of the foilage and trees further back and on the furtherest hillside...
Hi, Eubie, I really like the colors you used in these.
thanks,,I have decided that the top redone picture is done, I cooled down the hot yellows a tiny bit. Time to frame it...S
