No doubt, everyone said they would love to go it money wasn't the large consideration. But then the question came up, "what is a master"? Who designates you as a master? Everyone agreed that Richard Schmid highly qualifies if there is such a title due to not only the quality of his work but the mass diversification and 60+ years as a painter, author and teacher. But it was an interesting question. Can someone be a great painter but not a master?

"Raspberry Mascarpone"

This painting is my ice breaker coming back to painting after half a week gone again, I've been hosting friends from out of town. I'm excited to get back into painting, this painting was complicated to do but very educational. You can see the making of this painting on my blog. The size is 5 x 7 inches and done oils. Thanks for stopping by and viewing!

Umbrellas Water Mixable Oil

Just completed this Water Mixable Oil painting, 24" x 36". It's a view of the Italian resort island of Capri.

I started this one in February, and worked on it on and off since then. I found the people to be challenging, particularly the faces, but learned a tremendous amount in working on this painting.

However, over the last couple of years I have encountered very serious problems with it.

As best I can tell, there is a drastic inconsistency in the sizing on the paper. On some sheets the paper seems to be resisting the paint. As a simple wash of transparent color dries, the color fades drastically and tiny pin holes of white occur. A second or third wash does not solve the problem, rather the condition continues. The general effect is that both the color intensity and value disappear before your eyes. I have talked to many other artists who have encountered the very same problems and are not happy at all. I've tried to email Arches through Canson and as of now, the messages bounce back. Obviously there is a gross lack of quality control with Arches watercolor paper. I have been a professional artist for 44 years. I know how to handle watercolor and watercolor paper and know what to expect. I am not interested in simply venting my frustrations. I want to see this problem corrected. I've soaked sheets, scrubbed them down and prayed over them. I am not interested in changing papers unless I have no other choice. I consider Arches almost as an old friend. However, as of late, Arches has been a friend I have not been abel to rely on.

in France and even here in America, I came to understand the importance
of laying with colors.

Most of us usually do the laying with
a mud or brown color. I really think that this bring the painting to a
state of stillness. If there is something that put apart the French 19th
century impressionist to the other ones, for me, it is the movement in
there paintings.

Here an example of laying in colors with
movement. The shapes are not identified as big masses but rather lines
more like a dry point sketch. Design design design !! There is no more
than 6 main colors. You can also see that the artist did not obsessed
about what the perfect color through a color finder but rather explore
the organic harmony of the light of the scene which is not studied when
you only do a values laying. Also movement is studied because he uses
lines rather than big shapes.

I've been mounting my watercolors to board and varnishing them for quite some time, and not only does it make framing easier, but the results are not easily confused with giclee prints, nor do I have to worry about reflections from glazing distorting the image.

I've been using Golden's UV protective acrylic varnish with great results. I seem to sell my watercolors faster when they are varnished and framed like oils.

I'm reluctant to begin cutting mats and buying plexi again just so that I can enter watercolor society shows. Making this change is too expensive for me, and I find that once I put a mat on my watercolors, folks can't tell whether it's a giclee or not.

So, I guess I won't be entering any watermedia shows until they change the rules. In the meantime, I'm selling my watercolors on my own - especially the varnished ones.
