&lt;p&gt;Yes, realism was redefined ...so that &amp;nbsp;the bad realist painters had to quit painting or to start coloring the B/W photos.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;I was an abstractionist having your same opinion about the camera and the realism nowadays....until I (re)discovered the (classical) realism and it&amp;#39;s beauty and superiority to any high-end camera + photoshop&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;As for a $100 camera doing a better job..well, maybe a better job then the dozens of so called realists amateurs you may find on Etsy . &lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;There isn&amp;#39;t a style immune to similar comments:&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Why paint like that - I could take a photograph.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Why paint like that - a 5 year old with no training can do that.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Why paint like that &amp;nbsp;- I can use photoshop to filter a picture.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;On and on and on.&lt;/p&gt;
