Marcia Burtt: Weekend With the Masters Instructor

Marcia Burtt graduated from University of California Berkeley with a major in psychology and earned an M.A. in art from the University of Montana. Her paintings have been included in exhibitions organized by the Los Angeles County Museum of Natural History and a number of other regional museums.

She has twice been a guest of the Forbes family and American Artist magazine, participating in painting events at the Forbes ranch in Colorado and their chateau in Normandy. She painted for a month in Yosemite National Park as artist-in-residence. Burtt is a founding member of The Oak Group and of SCAPE (Southern California Artists Painting for the Environment). These groups have raised well over a million dollars to preserve open spaces.

Burtt not a painter who stays in the studio. She is a committed plein air painter who works in acrylics. She has been a plein air painter for more than 30 years. Her work is steeped in the need to be in front of the subject matters—usually natural elements—that can serve as inspiration to her. She is a natural observer and, simply put, paints what is in front of her, particularly the rocky coast and sweeping waves of the Pacific near her home, though she has travelled all over the world painting and drawing inspiration. Painting on location is one of the aspects of her art that brings her the most joy and fulfillment.

Her work frequently appears in art publications and recently she was awarded first place in the San Luis Obispo plein air festival and artist’s choice in the Sedona plein air event. Burtt and her husband Dave live on a 1200-acre ranch on California’s central coast. Marcia also conducts several workshops a year for plein air painting students.
