Welcome to the new American Artist Quick Sketches blog! Readers of our print magazine should recognize the name "Quick Sketches" and will most likely see similarities between the department in American Artist and this blog. We'll use this space to highlight noteworthy news items, exhibitions, award winners, and art supplies.
First up is the "Make Your Mark Competition"
Fine-art-material supplier Daler-Rowney is celebrating its 225th anniversary with the “Make Your Mark” art competition. Open to artists of all ages and skill levels worldwide, the competition’s main goal is to encourage people to paint and make their mark in a celebration of art. All forms of painting and drawing can be entered by uploading a digital photo of the work to the competition website in one of four categories: Junior (under 12 years old), Secondary (under 16 years old), Further Education (full-time art students), and Leisure Painters.
Twenty artists will be selected as finalists (five from each category) and will be invited to display their work at the Mall Gallery, in London. The competition judges—including American Artist’s editor-in-chief M. Stephen Doherty—will select winners from each category. Winners in the“Under 12”and “Under 16” categories will win a painting set, a certificate, and £1,000 (or the equivalent in local currency) worth of art materials for the artist’s school. Artists entered in the “Further Education” category are eligible for the prize of a two-night stay in London to spend a day with an acclaimed artist; and artists in the Leisure Painter category are eligible for a trip to the Dominican Republic for a one-week visit to an art sanctuary.
Deadline for entry is December 1, 2008. For more information, visit www.mymcompetition.com.
