Featuring works created between 1839 and 1936, this exhibition at the Brooklyn Museum includes seven works on paper that served as preparatory drawings for oil paintings in the museum’s permanent collection as well as some of the completed paintings themselves. In addition to the studies and related finished works, the exhibition includes a number of infrared photographs that document a later step in the creation of the completed painting: the drawings that the artists executed on the canvas before applying the paint. This exhibition was organized by the Brooklyn Museum to celebrate the recent publication of the major authoritative catalogue American Paintings in the Brooklyn Museum: Artists Born by 1876.
