Software company e frontier has created a new program that will allow artists to paint and sketch from models without needing a live person in-studio. Figure Artist, a simpler, easier-to-use version of the popular Poser software that has been on the market for 10 years, is specially designed to help both traditional and graphic artists create the human form on canvas, in sculpture, and in digitally generated artwork. The program allows artists to choose from one of 12 different models (additional models are available for purchase) and set figures up on a computer screen as they would a human model in the studio. The software features an intuitive, workflow-based interface that guides the artist through the few steps necessary to set up a model on the stage, including how to add hair, clothing, facial expressions, and appropriate lighting conditions. The program also offers controls to fine-tune poses by moving limbs, fingers, and all other body parts with ease. Figure Artist includes a library that contains hundreds of poses, garments, facial expressions, hairstyles, and backgrounds; a built-in internet browser provides access to thousands of additional items online that can be downloaded and added to the artist’s library. With the help of library files, figures can be posed either nude or clothed, props such as chairs can be added, lights can be set, and the figure can be viewed from any angle.
Linda Hellfritch, an artist from Santa Cruz, California, tested Poser Artist for e frontier: “I was happy to discover that working from a computer-generated image could provide me with so much detail. The program doesn’t replace fundamental life-drawing skills or knowledge of anatomy; it can, however, serve as an extremely functional tool in the fine-art studio.”
