En Plein Air: Holiday Exhibitions & Shows

3 Dec 2009

‘Tis the time of the year when galleries across the country host their annual holiday exhibitions, giving artists, dealers, and collectors the opportunity to gather around great art and share some Christmas cheer. Whether these shows are organized around a winter theme; feature small, more affordable works for collectors looking to make one last end-of-year investment or gift purchase; or just provide a chance for galleries to showcase their top inventory as well as the work of special invited guest artists, holiday shows are great opportunities for everyone in the art world to celebrate and support the many talented painters in our country. I thought I’d highlight a few upcoming holiday shows featuring landscape artists for your plein-air-minded perusal. (Note: I had to throw the Waterhouse Gallery figurative exhibition in at the end because it is one of the most beautiful collections of contemporary work I have seen organized in one place!) I hope that you get a chance to see some of these or other exhibitions in your area and that they provide a refreshing reprieve from the hustle and bustle of the holiday season. A happy, healthy, joyful Christmas and New Year to you all!

Allison,

This is a great write-up of shows from east to west, and the snow scenes you selected definitely get me in the holiday spirit! For all of those who don't live near these major cities, I'm sure you can find similar holiday shows in your area. Just get out en plein air and take a look around! - Naomi

I love the miniature pieces, they manage to show so much essence in such a small space. I just painted a 6X8 on Saturday en plein air and looking at my fellow artist's small pieces was a joy, we all had different scenes we captured out in the wilderness.
