In the February 2007 issue of American Artist, we explored how oil painter Josh Elliott painted tones and designs in his landscapepaintings. Here, we offer more of Elliott's picturesque scenes, including several of what he calls his "tone poems." "The ideas behind these paintings," Elliott explains, "come from rugs, clothes, or anything with a pattern. The colors are meant to look good together without limiting the palette to just yellows or reds. So, my 'tone poems' are done with tones that I think make a nice color design." For instance, in Outside Radersburg Elliott painted the trees and grasses with autumn golds instead of spring greens. He also tends to search for scenes that are limited in color, such as in February, or crop scenes, as in Afternoon, Hyalite Creek. "There is no formula for these paintings," Elliot explains. "I use my intuition to arrange the colors as a poet arranges words."
