This book, featuring Michael Graves' drawings and pencil sketches of Italian cityscapes and buildings, suggests that Graves came from a traditional artistic background. Considering where he is now--designer of popular household products, as well as iconic buildings--confirmation of this point is interesting.

Judging from the images posted at this review, the book might be worth reading.

When Mr. Graves' health and popularity were at their peak, he revived a tradition of collaborating with artists for the decoration of his buildings. He hired Edward Schmidt to create figurative pieces for buildings in Cincinnati and Napa Valley, and he commissioned marvelous figurative sculptures for his buildings in Portland and Louisville.
