Turpentine safety tips

24 Feb 2009

Q: Do you have any safety tips regarding the use and disposal of turpentine?

A: Turpentine is primarily used by artists to thin paints, make varnishes, and clean paint from brushes and equipment. It should be store in tightly sealed metal containers in a cool, dark area because exposure to light hastens its aging process. To dispose of turpentine, call your local sanitation department to find out the best way to dispose of hazardous materials.

I use the Artist's Bottle to store my paint medium (turpentine + linseed oil).  It's a specially made plastic that is resistant to mineral spirits and turpentine (normal plastics will crack and warp).  It also has a flip top lid (thus less fumes and spills) and you can pour medium directly onto the palette rather than having to clean the brush to dip into a jar of medium.
