Turpentine on pastel paper

24 Feb 2009

Q: Can I use turpentine on pastel paper?

A: The turpentine may not hasten the deterioration of the pastel paper but it will likely leave a dark stain, as it is a resinous material. Mineral spirits are less likely to leave a stain, and many pastelists use isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol) to get a washy effect on their pastel paintings.
