Painting on Glass

24 Feb 2009

Q: I recently found an old glass window and would like to paint a scene on it using acrylic paint. Is there a base that I should apply first? I tried a sample and it didn't cover well. Do I have to paint it twice?

A:
Glass invites light, and therefore requires layers of paint for complete coverage. By just adding white or cadmium colors to your paint you will get better coverage. There are, however, many acrylic “craft” paints that are designed specifically for painting on glass, ceramic, metal, and other non-canvas surfaces. Most of these paints are opaque and opaque paint covers better than transparent paint. Be sure to read the labels, as some paints are as transparent as fine-art acrylics and will need additional layers for better coverage.
