Mural Hanging

24 Feb 2009

Q: I have been commissioned to do a mural and would like to paint it on canvas with oil paint, and then apply the canvas to the wall. What should I use to glue the canvas to the wall? Also, what type of canvas should I use? I want to be sure that the painting will last for many years since it will be hanging in a church.

A: You should consider hiring professionals who hang wallpaper to help you hang the mural because they are trained and insured for this type of installation. The next best thing is to purchase your own high quality wallpaper paste—I recommend using a strong archival adhesive--to adhere the canvas mural to the wall. You will want to paint the wall with a matte paint before you hang the mural because the matte finish has a tooth that will grab the glue. I also recommend using a high-quality canvas for your mural such as Artfix canvas.
