Q: I want to purchase a large amount of heavy-bodied acrylic
paint suitable for applying to large canvases with a spackle knife.
What is the most economic way of doing so?
A: There are acrylic brands that say "heavy body" on
the label. Liquitex is one. You can also consider adding an impasto
medium to your paints; for instance, Lascaux and Golden carry mediums
that can give your paint a heavy body. I prefer Lascaux because its
mediums do not separate. Its Impasto Gel can be used alone or mixed
with colors for different sheens and textures and it dries to a
waterproof film that is flexible, colorless, non-yellowing, lightfast,
and crack-resistant. Lascaux also carries a medium called Structura
Light Modeling Paste that is ultra light-weight but also holds stiff
peaks with minimal color alteration.
