Q: I’ve recently started painting with egg tempera, and I’m
working on my first egg tempera/oil emulsion painting. The problem is
that I live on a ship and cannot bring hazmat on board, so I have
invested in water-soluble oil paint to mix with the egg tempera to
create my emulsion. I was wondering if anyone has done this before and
how it will affect the archival quality of my painting.
A: I have never considered combining these two media because
each has a different drying chemistry. Sennelier makes a wonderful line
of egg tempera paints, and many egg tempera painters told me that the
results are of the same quality. You may want to reconsider your
experiments.
