Q: One of my students wishes to mount some paper cutouts from
magazines onto her oil painting on stretched canvas. What would be the
best way to adhere these, and what is the best way to seal them once
the surface is dry?
A: If the surface is dry, your student can apply a
layer of an alkyd, such as Liquin, over the entire painting, and the
images can be applied while the Liquin is wet. After the first layer
has dried, coat the canvas with two or more layers to seal the images
like a decoupage. Applying a final varnish will seal the artwork.
