Q: In the October 2006 issue of American Artist, John A. Parks wrote that Ken Auster
primes his canvas with acrylic gesso and then applies a coat of latex
exterior house paint because it makes the surface less absorbent.
Please explain the chemistry of how this combination works. Will oil
adhere to this canvas preparation long-term?
A: The gesso will "size" the canvas, and this process will
give the canvas its strength. The latex will also make the canvas silky
smooth. Be sure to use a high-quality latex paint that offers some
archival capabilities. Apply a thin coat to ensure an even application,
and oil paint will adhere to the canvas. I would suggest painting a few
small test pieces before you commit to a serious artwork.
