Leonardo da Vinci Biopic to Star Hollywood’s Leading Leo

In an upcoming biopic, Leonardo DiCaprio is slated to star as Old Master Leonardo da Vinci. The project is based on a soon-to-be published biography written by notable author Walter Isaacson. Isaacson, whose book publishes in October, also penned the film fodder for Steve Jobs, starring Michael Fassbender, and the NatGeo series Genius on Albert Einstein. No news on the angle the story will take, but DiCaprio’s production company is making the film, presumably giving the actor a lot of creative control over the end product.

Who Was the Renaissance Master?

Leonardo da Vinci’s reputation is legion. He was a mathematician, painter, sculptor, architect, inventor, author, musician and more. He was also, according to Simon & Schuster, publisher of Isaacson’s book: “a bit of a misfit: illegitimate, gay, vegetarian, left-handed, easily distracted, and at times heretical.”

What moments from the artist’s life will take pride of place in the new film? So many to choose from!

The painting of the Mona Lisa…

The dissection of cadavers in the pursuit of anatomical knowledge…

The creation of The Last Supper…

Sketching the Vitruvian Man…

Field testing his flying machine or putting his parachute design to the test…

The Actor Named for the Original Renaissance Man?

Rumor has it that DiCaprio’s mother named Leonardo when she first felt him kick in her belly. She happened to be standing in front of a Leonardo da Vinci artwork in an Italian museum and that sealed the deal. We will have to wait until the film takes to the big screen to see if the actor lives up to his name.

You have to admit there is quite a resemblance. DiCaprio’s hair is starting to recede, he’s growing a semi-beard but he looks as much like da Vinci as Mickey Rooney does. Yes, I know we are’t necessarily going for a resemblance but it could help.

Having an actor who does not look like the subject can be an advantage. Consider the production, “The Agony and the Ecstasy”. Until seeing that motion picture, I didn’t know that Moses painted the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel.
