Our Artist of the Month, Alexandre Reider, hailing from São Paulo, Brazil, represents the South American readership of American Artist. Of São Paulo he says, “It’s the biggest city in Brazil, and it’s the place where everything happens—we have a great art market, for instance.” Not surprisingly, Reider also says he is most inspired by the natural beauty of his home country. “I travel a lot around mountain ridges, fields, and coastlines, sketching studies en plein air using graphite, watercolor, and oil,” the artist says. He bases his compelling landscape work on both his plein air studies and the photographs he takes in the field, and he completes his paintings in the studio.

Reider’s evocative landscapes have earned him awards from various art competitions and fine-art salons in Brazil. He attended the Pan-American School of Art, in São Paulo, and studied for three years with Luiz Pinto, one of Brazil’s premier landscape painters. Reider currently teaches art classes and workshops in São Paolo and is a frequent juror of art competitions. His favorite artists from the United States include Matt Smith, Morgan Weistling, and Richard Schmid.
